Nursing home abuse can occur to any elder in any state in America. However, there are some risk factors that may contribute to certain elders experiencing this type of abuse. Allow us to explain:
1. Nursing Home Abuse is More Common Among those with a Mental Condition
Mental conditions change the way people behave, think, and process events. If your elderly loved one suffers from a mental illness or disorder, they may be more susceptible to nursing home abuse. Several examples of mental conditions include:
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Anxiety Disorder
- Bipolar Disorder
- Clinical Depression
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Schizophrenia
2. Abuse in a Skilled Nursing Home Facility is More Likely to Happen to Females
A study that was published by Justice Quarterly showed that sexual abuse is more likely to happen to females than males. However, abuse is not gender-specific. It is important to be watchful for all types of abuse, no matter the gender of your elderly loved one.
3. Elder Abuse in an Extended Care Facility Happens More Often to Veterans
Because a majority of veterans suffer from PTSD and require more medical care than other elders, they are more likely to experience nursing home abuse or in other facilities such as extended care, long-term care, or a skilled nursing home. These men and women who sacrificed so much should be taken care of, not abused! Our team fiercely represents those who have suffered abuse in their care facilities.
4. Abuse in a Long-Term Care Facility is More Common Among Elders Who Identify as LGBTQ+
The acronym “LGBTQ+” stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning. Elders who identify as LGBTQ+ may be more susceptible to abuse in long-term care facilities due to the caregivers’ thoughts or feelings toward this group of people.
