Today marks the first day of Fire Prevention Week. The purpose of this eye-opening week is to spread awareness to business owners, home owners, and everyone in between to be proactive about fire safety. To prevent fires in the workplace and in the home, consider these simple tips:
Office Fires
Did you know that most office fires occur between 7pm and 7am? Many experts believe that those are the most common times that a fire occurs because no one is at the office to extinguish the fire. Because of this, it’s very common for workspaces to get the brunt of the fire. Fortunately, there are simple tips to keep your building safe even when you’re not there:
- Avoid using power strips
- Don’t allow team members to burn candles
- Don’t store paper materials by hot equipment
- Never run power cords under rugs or carpet
- Replace frayed power cords immediately
- Unplug appliances at the end of each workday
House Fires
A house fire can completely disrupt and uproot your life. Your home holds memories, both intangible and tangible, that cannot be replaced. It’s important to do everything in your power to prevent a house fire from occurring. Consider these tips:
- Discard cigarette butts and cigars appropriately
- Extinguish fires completely
- Hire a professional to check your HVAC each year
- Keep flammable items away from ignition sources
- Place kindling sources (firewood, trash, leaves, etc.) away from the house
- Remove dryer lint after each use
